Attack on Huaripampa police post

PCP-SL attack on the police post in Huaripampa, Jauja, resulting in the death of two policemen and the parish priest Teodoro Santos Mejía on June 16, 1989.

On June 16, 1989, a group of subversives of the PCP-SL attacked the police post in the district of Huaripampa, in the province of Jauja. Two policemen and Teodoro Santos Mejia, who was the local parish priest, were killed during the scuffle. This attack was part of the escalation of violence experienced in the department of Junin during the period 1987-1992, when the PCP-SL intensified its operations in the region. Attacking police posts was one of the PCP-SL's frequent tactics for seizing weapons and demonstrating its operational capacity in the area.
