On June 3, 1989, the PCP-Sendero Luminoso carried out a bomb attack against soldiers of the "Húsares de Junín" regiment in the district of Barrios Altos, Lima. The attack resulted in the death of seven soldiers. This attack took place in a context of intensification of subversive actions in the capital, during the period in which the PCP-SL sought to consolidate its strategy of "siege of the city" and turn Lima into a priority scenario of struggle. The attack against military forces was part of the escalation of violence that characterized 1989 in Metropolitan Lima.
