Ucayali declared in state of emergency

On June 1, 1989, Ucayali was declared in a state of emergency with the installation of a Political-Military Command led by the Navy. This measure responded to social conflicts generated by the economic crisis and peasant strikes that lasted three weeks.

On June 1, 1989, the Peruvian State declared Ucayali an emergency zone, installing a Political-Military Command led by the Navy. This measure was taken in response to the problems generated by the hyperinflation of 1989, which prevented the state-owned companies ENCI and ECASA from paying peasants, causing regional strikes organized by the Confederation of Peruvian Peasants (Confederación de Campesinos del Perú, CCP). In Ucayali, the peasants grouped in FECADU and the Shipibo-Conibo natives went on strike for three weeks. The exception regime was established for different areas of the jungle due to these social conflicts and the growing subversive presence in the region.
