Landslides in Venenillo and surrounding hamlets

Approximately 300 people, including civilians and children, killed in military operation in Venenillo

In June 1989, approximately 300 people died in the village of Venenillo as a result of a confrontation between subversive elements and military personnel. It was later reported that many of the dead were civilians, including children. According to the testimony of a former military officer, General Alberto Arciniega Huby ordered that they 'raze to the ground', executing all the people found in the surrounding area. The corpses were burned or thrown into the river. The operation was directed by Lieutenant Colonel Pedro Tello Delgado of the Counter-subversive Battalion N° 313.
