PCP-SL enters the province of Coronel Portillo
In mid-1989, PCP-SL entered the province of Coronel Portillo in Ucayali, expanding from Padre Abad to the districts of Masisea and Iparia across the Ucayali River. Although it faced initial resistance and failures in some incursions, it managed to establish Organized Committees and Open Popular Committees in several villages in the area between 1989 and early 1990.
Once settled and with control of the drug business in Padre Abad, PCP-SL continued its political and military expansion into the province of Coronel Portillo, entering the Ucayali River, mainly the districts of Masisea and Iparia, in mid-1989. PCP-SL carried out one of its first incursions into the town of Iparia in mid-1989. Another important action was carried out on November 3, 1989, although this incursion failed when the villagers fled to Pucallpa or to their farms and immediately alerted the armed forces. Despite these initial vain attempts, PCP-SL succeeded in forming Organized Committees and Open Popular Committees in the hamlets located along the Tamaya River and the banks of the Suaya, Butsaya and Noaya rivers between the end of 1989 and the beginning of 1990.
