On Friday, May 19, 1989, a group of the PCP-SL assassinated Marcelino Pachari Roselló, provincial mayor of Azángaro and militant of the Communist Party of Peru "Patria Roja". The mayor was inspecting the reconstruction of the bridge that days before had been blown up by a detachment of the PCP-SL. This assassination was part of a violent campaign in May 1989, which included the assassination of several mayors and other authorities in the region. May 1989 was one of the most violent months of the internal armed conflict in Puno, with assassinations of authorities, razing of the Waqrani IER and attacks on various localities.
