Assassination of the provincial mayor of Azángaro, Marcelino Pachari Roselló

On May 19, 1989, the PCP-Sendero Luminoso assassinated Marcelino Pachari Roselló, provincial mayor of Azángaro, while he was inspecting the reconstruction of a bridge previously blown up by the same subversive organization. This assassination was part of a wave of violence against authorities in Puno during 1989.

On Friday, May 19, 1989, a group of the PCP-Sendero Luminoso assassinated Marcelino Pachari Roselló, provincial mayor of Azángaro. The mayor was inspecting the reconstruction of the bridge that had been blown up days before by a detachment of the PCP-Sendero Luminoso. This assassination was part of a series of attacks carried out by the PCP-SL in May 1989 in the Puno region. Two days after the mayor's assassination, on the night of May 21, the PCP-SL column destroyed the facilities of the IER Waqrani, on the outskirts of Ayaviri. Between January and July 1989, the PCP-SL caused 23 casualties in the police forces and 14 authorities were executed in the region.
