On May 16, 1989, an armed strike took place in the city of Huancavelica. This event took place in the midst of a series of strikes called in the region, days after President Alan García Pérez traveled to Huancayo to call on the population to overcome fear. The armed strike was part of the intimidation and territorial control actions that subversive groups carried out in different cities of the country during that period.
