Hiking campaign in Azángaro and Melgar
Violent campaign by the PCP-Sendero Luminoso between May 13 and 25, 1989 in Azángaro and Melgar, which included the assassination of mayors, destruction of the Waqrani IER and attacks on multiple localities. May 1989 was one of the most violent months of the conflict in Puno.
Between May 13 and 25, 1989, the main column of the PCP-Sendero Luminoso carried out a devastating campaign in the provinces of Azángaro and Melgar. On May 19, they assassinated Marcelino Pachari Roselló, provincial mayor of Azángaro and militant of the Communist Party of Peru 'Patria Roja', who was inspecting the reconstruction of a bridge. On May 21 they destroyed the facilities of the IER 'Waqrani' on the outskirts of Ayaviri. On May 22 they took the district of Ayrampuni, assassinated the mayor Daniel Curro Chambi and set fire to the school premises. This campaign also included the attack on Chuquibambilla and the assassination of other authorities.
