On May 6, 1989, a PCP-SL group confronted a police patrol in Azángaro. The confrontation resulted in the death of 6 policemen, 7 hikers and one civilian. This event occurred in the context of a violent campaign by the PCP-SL during May 1989, which included the assassination of authorities and attacks on installations in the provinces of Azángaro and Melgar. May 1989 was one of the most violent months in Puno, with multiple assassinations of mayors and other authorities.
