In May 1989, the PCP-SL set fire to the SAIS 'La Pauca', one of the last associative enterprises in the San Marcos region. This attack was part of the Shining Path's strategy of systematic liquidation of the associative enterprises created during the Agrarian Reform. The destruction of La Pauca was part of a period of intensified violence in the area, where the PCP-SL sought to eliminate the cooperative structures in order to reorganize the territory under its control through support bases and popular committees.
