In May 1989, the PCP-SL assassinated the mayor of the district of Cachachi along with his wife, as part of its strategy to eliminate local authorities. The attack included the dynamiting of the municipal building. This event is part of the Shining Path offensive to liquidate associative enterprises and eliminate resistant authorities in the region. The murder was part of a series of violent actions by the PCP-SL in the provinces of San Marcos and Cajabamba during that period.
