Clash in Molinos between the MRTA and the Peruvian Army
Armed confrontation in Molinos, Jauja, between MRTA and the Peruvian Army that left 58 MRTA members dead, 6 EP soldiers and 2 civilians dead. The MRTA detachment was on its way to take the city of Tarma when it was intercepted.
On April 28, 1989, an MRTA detachment traveling in two trucks toward Tarma to take the city was discovered by a Peruvian Army patrol in the Molinos district, eight kilometers east of Jauja. An armed confrontation ensued resulting in the death of 58 MRTA members, six members of the Peruvian Army and two civilians. Initially it was reported that 62 MRTA members and eight soldiers were killed, but the figures were later corrected. This confrontation represented one of the most lethal episodes for MRTA during the internal armed conflict.
