On April 28, 1989, PCP-SL militants committed the murder of three university students on the campus of the National University of Central Peru in Huancayo. This event occurred in a context where the PCP-SL had increased its intense agitation and armed propaganda work at the university, taking advantage of the decline of the MRTA after the Molinos events. The killings marked the beginning of a series of executions against students inside the university campus. This event took place on the same day as the Molinos massacre in Jauja, where 63 alleged MRTA members were killed in a confrontation with the Army.
