On April 28, 1989, PCP-SL militants assassinated three students of APRA affiliation on the campus of the National University of Central Peru (UNCP). This event took place in the context of a bloody struggle between the PCP-SL and the MRTA for control of the university, which became visible in 1989. The murder of the three APRA students was part of a series of violent actions at the UNCP during that year, which also included the murder of a police officer on March 12 and the deadly attack against professor Luis Aguilar Romaní on July 18.
