MRTA Attack on Pichanaki

The MRTA attacked the Pichanaki police post on April 28, 1989 with a column of thirty heavily armed subversives. Subsequently, the MRTA columns were practically annihilated by the Peruvian Army in the district of Molinos (Jauja) that same day.

A column of thirty heavily armed MRTA subversives attacked the Pichanaki police post. After the attack, the column began to move towards the highlands to join up with another column coming down from Tulumayo, in the highlands of Junin, with the objective of jointly taking the city of Tarma. However, both columns met on April 28, 1989 with Peruvian Army forces in the district of Molinos (Jauja) and were practically annihilated in combat. This event represented a serious setback for the MRTA, whose apparatus was already resentful since the capture of its leader Victor Polay in Huancayo on February 31, 1989.
