Shining Path takeover of Acolla and murder of Mayor Victor Mayta Galarza

On April 20, 1989, the Shining Path took over the main square of Acolla after causing a blackout. They captured the aprista mayor Víctor Mayta Galarza and executed him with two shots in the head after a popular trial.

On Thursday, April 20, 1989, at 7:30 p.m., after several explosions and a subsequent blackout, a column of the PCP-SL took the main square of Acolla. The Shining Path guerrillas captured the APRA mayor Víctor Mayta Galarza and after a popular trial they assassinated him with two bullets to the head. This event occurred days before the confrontation between the MRTA and the Army in Molinos, and modified the MRTA's initial plans to take the city of Tarma.
