San Marcos and La Cantuta Universities raid

Combined army and police forces raided the universities of San Marcos and La Cantuta on April 19, 1989, arresting more than 500 students in counter-subversive operations.

On April 19, 1989, combined Army and police forces carried out a simultaneous raid on the universities of San Marcos and La Cantuta in Lima. More than 500 students were arrested during the operation. This operation was part of the counter-subversive strategy of the APRA government in a context of growing PCP-Sendero Luminoso activity in the capital. The raid was part of the actions of the forces of order protected by emergency laws that contributed to worsen the climate of insecurity and terror in Lima.
