This assassination occurred in the context of a series of paramilitary attacks against leaders of the mining movement. The paramilitaries took advantage of the violence to stop the mining movement by eliminating union leaders. Days earlier, on February 13, the secretary general of the FNTMMSP, Saúl Cantoral, had been kidnapped and murdered, and on April 5, the secretary general of the Morococha union was murdered.
