On April 15, 1989, the PCP-Sendero Luminoso dynamited the industrial relations offices and the air pipe at the Morococha mining camp, owned by Centromín Perú. This attack was part of a series of violent actions carried out by the subversive organization against mining installations in the central region of the country. The action was part of a broader campaign by the PCP-SL to generate favorable conditions for an armed strike in the mining area. The day after the attack in Morococha, on April 16, Seferino Requis, secretary general of the Cerro de Pasco union base, was assassinated during an assembly in the union premises.
