Arrival of military personnel in the Canipaco valley
The military arrived for the first time in the Canipaco valley on April 12, 1989, after the massacre in Chongos Alto. This military intervention marked the beginning of the state counter-offensive in the area, which would later be consolidated with the installation of permanent military bases beginning in 1990.
The military arrived for the first time in the Canipaco valley after the event of April 12, 1989, which was the most shocking massacre in the entire Canipaco area. This military arrival was in response to the massacre perpetrated the previous day (April 11-12) in Chongos Alto, where authorities and residents of several communities had been attacked. Later, with Alberto Fujimori's government in 1990, permanent military bases were installed in the districts of Chicche (Vista Alegre Annex) and San Juan de Jarpa, and then in 1991 in the districts of Chongos Bajo, Huamancaca Chico and Chupaca. With the installation of the military base in the Vista Alegre annex in 1990, the presence of the PCP-SL decreased significantly throughout the area.
