Chicche Massacre
Massacre perpetrated by the PCP-SL in the early morning of April 12, 1989 in Chicche, against authorities and villagers who had met the day before to plan defense actions. The attack also included the destruction of productive infrastructure.
In the early morning of April 12, 1989, the PCP-SL perpetrated a massacre in Chicche. The day before, April 11, authorities and residents representing the communities of Chicche, Chongos Alto, Llamapsillón, Palaco, Vista Alegre and Palmayoc had met clandestinely in Chongos Alto during the weekly fair to plan defense actions against the presence of the PCP-SL in the area. In the early morning of April 12, when they were to return to their places of safety, they were attacked by hikers. Some villagers noted that most of the attackers wore typical highlander clothing and that only 15 people were armed. That day they also destroyed a sheep farm and dynamited irrigation canals. Witnesses speculate that it may have been an act of revenge related to the alliance between 'Langainos' and 'Senderistas', and the land conflict between Huasincanchinos and Chonguinos is also mentioned as an underlying motive.
