In April 1989, the PCP-Sendero Luminoso took over the facilities of the University City of the UNSAAC and embandero, as part of its strategy to control the university. This event was part of the struggle for political control of the San Antonio Abad University that increased during this period, where various subversive forces (PCP-Sendero Luminoso, MRTA, Puka Llacta) tried to control the university unions. The taking of the University City was one of the most spectacular actions of the PCP-SL in the city of Cuzco during this period, while the attacks in the city continued. This event occurred in the context of the expansion of violence in the southern Andean region between 1984-1988, when the highest levels of deaths from the internal armed conflict were reached.
