Combate de Molinos
Clash between approximately 80 MRTA militants and Army forces in the district of Molinos, Jauja, which resulted in 62 deaths, constituting a hard blow to the subversive organization. The army allegedly extrajudicially executed some of the local inhabitants.
In April 1989, approximately 80 members of the MRTA detachment were moving towards the Junin highlands with the intention of taking Tarma, when they encountered Army forces in the district of Molinos, Jauja province, and engaged in combat. The confrontation resulted in the death of 62 people identified as MRTA members, although the organization only claimed responsibility for 42 of them. The army reportedly detained and disappeared some local people and extrajudicially executed others. This combat represented a major blow to the MRTA in the central jungle, occurring shortly after a failed attack on the Pichanaki police post in March 1989.
