On March 13, 1989, a column of the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement (MRTA) took the town of Pichanaki, located in the province of Chanchamayo. This event took place in a context of intensification of MRTA's armed actions in the central region of the country. The capture of the city was part of the MRTA operations in the central jungle area during that period. This event occurred in the same month in which the Peruvian government announced measures to involve the peasant patrols in the anti-subversive struggle.
