Incursion in Pilluana and Shapaja

On March 4, 1989, the MRTA raided the towns of Pilluana and Shapaja as part of its military actions in the department of San Martin. During this incursion in Pilluana, the MRTA assassinated 3 local authorities whom they accused of being involved in drug trafficking. This action was part of the campaign of the Northeastern Front (FNO) of the MRTA to demonstrate its presence in the region after its reconstruction at the beginning of 1989. The incursions took place in the context of the reconstitution of the Tupacamarista Army of the FNO after the repression exercised by the Peruvian Army between December 1987 and February 1988.
