In March 1989, around 30 armed MRTA men attacked the Pichanaki police post in Chanchamayo province. This attack was part of the MRTA's operations in the central jungle during its period of expansion in the area. A few days after this attack, the subversives marched into the Junin highlands to join the MRTA highland detachment, made up of 37 militants, with the intention of taking Tarma in April. This movement culminated in the Molinos confrontation in the district of Jauja, where the MRTA detachment suffered a heavy blow from Army forces.
