PCP-SL assassinates Mayor Ciro Clemente Cairo in San José de Quero
The PCP-SL assassinated Mayor Ciro Clemente Cairo with two bullets on the access road to San José de Quero, and set fire to public buildings including the Municipality. This crime was part of the Shining Path offensive against authorities in Alto Cunas.
In the early morning of February 13, 1989, an undetermined number of hikers entered San José de Quero and violently extracted Ciro Clemente Cairo, Mayor of the district, from his home. The PCP-SL militants killed him with two bullets on the access road to the community. Subsequently, they proceeded to set fire to the premises of the Municipality, the Community and the house of the Justice of the Peace. This murder was part of a systematic campaign by the PCP-SL against local authorities in the Alto Cunas area during 1988-1989.
