Assassination of authorities in San José

On January 29, 1989, the PCP-SL assassinated 7 authorities in the district of San José, province of Azángaro. Among the victims were the deputy mayor, alderman, governor and other local authorities. This attack was part of a wider campaign of violence that the PCP-SL developed in May 1989 in the provinces of Azángaro and Melgar, which included the assassination of mayors and other authorities. May 1989 was one of the most violent months in Puno, with multiple assassinations of authorities and attacks on institutions.
