The I National Congress of Izquierda Unida (IU) was held despite the call for an armed strike by the PCP-SL. The Congress lasted three days and approved a statutory modification whereby the National Steering Committee (CDN) would have a collegiate presentation of eight members, including Pease, Ames, Pedraglio, Barrera, Diez Canseco, Herrera and an eighth member to be elected by the CDN. After several altercations, finally on November 30, 1989, the new CDN of IU was installed under the presidency of Senator Jorge del Prado Chavez.
