Armed strike on Carretera Central

First armed strike called by the PCP-Sendero Luminoso in Lima, carried out on January 19, 1989 on the Central Highway, coinciding with the I Congress of the United Left in Huampaní. This action marked the beginning of a strategy of armed strikes as part of the Shining Path's strategic balance.

On January 19, 1989, the PCP-Sendero Luminoso called and carried out the first armed strike in Lima, specifically in the area of the Central Highway. This armed strike strategically coincided with the First Congress of the United Left that was being held in Huampaní, with the political objective of competing with the United Left as a political project. The armed strikes were part of a logic of intimidation and orchestration of actions by the PCP-SL, with the aim of provoking the collapse of the State through the generalization of violence. This military action included all other forms of Shining Path struggle, including agitation and propaganda, sabotage, selective annihilation and guerrilla combat, with the clear political objective of isolating and undermining the State by demonstrating its impotence.
