Child punished for eating bananas at hiking camp

Shining Path punished a child with a "chicote" for eating bananas without permission in a camp.

In a Shining Path camp, a watchman punished the young son of one of the declarants with chicote (pieces of thick vines) because, due to his hunger, he had eaten 5 bananas without asking permission. The punishment was applied in front of everyone as a lesson for the rest. This testimony illustrates the exemplary punishments applied without distinction between children and adults in the trekking camps, where even 7-year-old children were subjected to violent discipline.
