Segundo Lozada, leader of the peasant patrols, is arrested without a warrant at his home in Montegrande, Jaen. Lozada was defending the autonomy of his organization against the government's imposition to create the so-called Self-Defense Committees in the area.
Dozens of MRTA members raid the city of Jaen, then attack the police posts of Chamaya, Cruce and Bellavista and make the police flee. The subversives manage to steal weapons and radio equipment. The attack left eight dead: five civilians, an Army captain and two PNP non-commissioned officers.
